Achilles Last Stand is the opening track of Presence, Led Zeppelin’s 7th album. It was written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant at Jimmy’s house in Malibu, California. They were staying there for a month while Plant recovered from a serious car accident. The song became a key component of almost every Led Zeppelin concert from their 1977 tour of the US. Here is a clip of Led Zeppelin performing the song live at the Knebworth festival in 1979:
The studio version lasts for 10:25. It is the 3rd longest studio song recorded by Led Zeppelin. John Paul Jones’s galloping bass line was played on a custom-built Alembic 8 string bass. The song is also famous for Page’s orchestral guitar arrangement which consists of about 12 or more guitar overdubs. The line in the song "The devil's in his hole" refers to a Victorian tourist attraction that Led Zeppelin visited while in Saint Mary, named "Devil's Hole", which featured a statue of a devil in a hole.
It was an April morning when they told us we should go As I turn to you you smiled at me how could we say no With all the fun to have to live the dreams we always had woa the songs to sing when we at last return again sending off a glancing kiss to those who claim they know to know the streets the seaman hears the devil is in his hole Oh to sail away to sandy lands and other days oh to touch the dream hides inside and never seen, yeah Into the sun the south the north lies the first of hope the shackles of commitment fell in pieces on the ground Oh to ride the wind to tread the air above the din oh to laugh aloud dancing eyes above the crowd To seek the man whose pointing hand the giant step unfolds With guidance from the curving path that churns up into stone If one bell should ring in celebration for a king so fast the heart should beat as proud the head with heavy feet, yeah Days went by when you and I made an eternal summers glow as far away and distant a mutual time to grow Oh the sweet refrain soothes the soul and calms the pain Oh Albion remains, sleeping now to rise again Wandering upon the rings what place to rest the search the mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth the mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth from the earth ooooooooooooooh I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way I used to know the way Oh the mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth…
