Led Zeppenin Song Facts: Whole Lotta Love

Wole Lotta Love, Live 1970, Royal Albert Hall:

Whole lotta love was Zeppelin’s first US single. It was their only top 10 hit in the US. Whole lotta love was the first song to use the “backward echo”. Jimmy Page put the echo of Plants voice before the lines were sung. Robert Plant did the vocals to Whole Lotta Love in one take. Blues great Willie Dixon sued the band, claiming they stole this from his song "You Need Love." Some other parts of the song and some of the lyrics were borrowed form a song called "You Need Loving" by the Small Faces. On some live versions, Jimmy Page played a device called a Theremin. This is a unique electronic instrument that Page liked to experiment with. It consists of a black box and an antenna. The sound is altered by moving one's hand closer to or farther from the antenna and was used to create the fuzz that alternates back and forth through the speakers. This can be seen in footage of the Led Zeppelin film “The Song Remains the Same”.
